Description
Preparation for greenhouse effect is one of the most essential challenge of the long-term energy strategy, the solution of which requires readiness for radical changes in energy production. The Finnish carbon dioxide committee has introduced different alternatives for reduction of carbon dioxide emissions of energy production. The most significant of these are increasing of nuclear power, additional use of natural gas, increased power production in combined heat and power production, and energy concervation. Storage of carbon into renewable biomass will become very important. The carbon dioxide emissions of Finland will increase from present 50 million tons CO2/a up to over 80 million tons. The effects of different energy delivery and utilization scenarios on CO2 emissions have been estimated in the report of the Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry. The main problem in CO2 removal is where to put the excess CO2. At present the only massive solutions are pumping of it into oil and natural gas fields of placement of it into deep ocean. The power production costs would increase about 25 % after CO2 scrubbing and after the final disposal they would be doubled. It would, however. be possible to double the power of the solid fuel or black liquor fired power plants by using the IGCC technology. This would be the possible way to increase the utilization of renewable biomass and peat as fuels, and to reduce the CO2 emissions by replacing the new coal fired condensing power plants or by leaving them out of the construction plans
