Dose estimate to the Australian population from the administration of radiopharmaceuticals
Description
The annual per capita effective dose (ED) and genetically significant dose (GSD) to the Australian population, arising from the practice of nuclear medicine, were estimated from the results of a survey of all major hospitals conducted for a four-week period during June-July 1991. Patients have been characterised by age and sex. The use of diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals results in values of 64 μSv and 26 μSv per capita for ED and GSD, respectively. The ED has shown a marked increase in the last decade. These values are compared to the estimated 2 mSv from natural background radiation. 4 refs., 2 tabs
