The experimental reactor AVR. Development, operation and accidents. Final report of the AVR expert group
Description
In 1959 the AVR working group started the development of a gas-cooled graphite moderated high-temperature pebble bed reactor. The experimental reactor was constructed at the site of the nuclear research center Juelich and operated from 1967 to 1988. The experimental pebble bed reactor is described within the report. An expert group studied the historical aspects of development, operation and accidents of the experimental reactor. The steam generator accident in 1978 is discussed in detail, including a technical evaluation of the accident sequence. The radiological aspects of the reactor operation and the contamination of soil and groundwater are included in the report.
