Turbulence and vortices in superfluid helium
Description
Vortex motion in superfluid He (SFH) is characterized theoretically in an introductory review for nonspecialists. The basic physical properties of ordinary He and SFH are described; the derivation of the two-fluid equations for the flow of SFH is outlined; the sound modes present in SFH are examined; quantized vortices are discussed; and the concept of turbulence in SFH is introduced, with particular attention to the relationship between the Gorter-Mellink friction force and vortex tangles. 65 refs
