High-β stellarator equilibria with three helical fields. A numerical experiment

  • 1. Los Alamos Scientific Lab., NM (USA)

Description

Analytical and numerical results suggest that well-confined equilibria do not exist for three-helical-field high-β stellarators. Although toroidal force balance that is nearly independent of β can be achieved with three helical-field configurations, the l,l+2 stellarator force leads to apparently unbounded deformation of the plasma cross-section and loss of confinement.
