Study on oxidation of Pu(III) by nitrous acid

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Div., Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Oxidation of Pu(III) to Pu(IV) by nitrous acid in nitric acid medium has been investigated. Solvent extraction by 30% TBP followed by α-counting with liquid scintillation, was employed to estimate Pu(III) at various stages of oxidation. Sulfamic acid was used to consume excess nitrous acid and to stop oxidation completely when so required. It was found that the order of oxidation relative to both HNO2 and Pu(III) is one. Using the data, value of K has been calculated to be approximately 85 M-3 min-1. (author)
