Radiation therapy of brain metastases

Description
Whole brain radiation therapy is the standard treatment for patients with a poor performance status or with 3 to 5 brain metastases. Whole brain radiation therapy improves the local control and overall survival rates after surgery and could be replaced by stereotactic radiation therapy of the tumor bed. Stereotactic radiation therapy is indicated for patients with 3 to 5 brain metastases less than 3 cm. Whole brain radiation therapy combined with stereotactic radiation therapy allows an improved local control rate and a decrease in the risk of new metastases, but does not improve overall survival. Abstract (French)
L'irradiation encephalique en totalite (IET) est une reference dans les cas de patients a l'etat general altere ou ayant 3 a 5 metastases cerebrales. L'IET postoperatoire permet une amelioration du controle local et de la survie globale. Elle peut etre remplacee par une radiotherapie en conditions stereotaxiques (RCS) du lit operatoire. La RCS est indiquee pour un nombre de metastases cerebrales inferieur a 3 a 5 et de moins de 3 cm de plus grand diametre. L'association de l'IET et de la RCS permet un meilleur controle local et une diminution du risque de nouvelle metastase, mais sans amelioration de la survie globale. (auteurs)Additional details
