Polarization transfer coefficients at E/sub d/ = 6 MeV for the charge symmetric 3H(d vector,n vector)4He and 3He(d vector, p vector)4He reactions

Description

Polarization transfer coefficients K/sub z//sup x'/ (THETA), K/sub y//sup y'/ (THETA), and K/sub zz//sup y'/ (THETA) are measured at angles forward of THETA/sub LAB/ = 600 for the charge symmetric 3H(d vector, n vector)4He and 3He(d vector, p vector)4He reactions at E/sub c/ = 6 MeV. These measurements were motivated in part to explore further the extent of differences in the tensor analyzing power A/sub zz/(00) observed earlier for these reactions. In addition, polarization transfer coefficients, which involve different and somewhat more selective combinations of matrix elements than do the usual polarization observables, are expected to provide new information in an energy region where complex level structures have been predicted. While differences between corresponding observables in both reactions were found, it is not yet certain as to whether such difference may be attributable solely to the coulomb effects. The polarization transfer coefficients were measured using the OSU polarized ion source which provides a vector (p/sub z/ approx. = 0.52) or tensor (p/sub zz/ approx. = 0.78) polarized deuteron beam. Comparison of the experimental results to existing data is difficult since the only existing angular distributions of polarization transfer coefficients in this energy region are at E/sub d/ = 7 MeV for the 3H(d vector, n vector)4He reaction, and at E/sub d/ = 8 MeV for the 3HE(d vector, p vector)4He reation. The data which do exist, however, show similarity in angular dependence to the present measurements. A comparison of the present experimental results between the two reaction shows that differences do exist, especially at THETA = 00 and also at THETA/sub LAB/ = 450. While it may be possible to account for these differences through a charge independent R-matrix analysis, (currently underway by Dodder and Hale at Los Alamos), preliminary calculations have suffered for the lack of these types of data
