Joining method for stainless steel pipe with zirconium alloy pipe

Description

The present invention concerns a method of joining a pressure tube and an extension tube of a PWR type reactor. Zirconium or a zirconium alloy is applied on the outer surface of a stainless steel pipe by ion plating or flame-coating. Alternatively, a titanium alloy containing 5% or 35% of aluminum of less noble potential than the stainless steel is applied on the outer surface of the stainless steel pipe by ion plating or flame-coating. As a result, the potential difference between the zirconium alloy and the stainless steel is decreased to suppress metal joining corrosion, and the melted oxygen diffused and penetrate to the gap between the stainless steel and the interposed material is captured by titanium and aluminum and converted into a stable oxide. Accordingly, the corrosion of the gap is suppressed, thereby enabling to prevent failures. (N.H.)
