Characterization of charged particle beam sources

  • 1. Westinghouse Research Labs., Pittsburgh, Pa. (USA)

Description

It is shown how a quantity Rsub(v)* with dimensions of A/m2 sr V (or W/m2 sr V2), and called richtstrahlwert-per-volt or radiance-per-volt-squared can be used for a quantitative characterization of all electron and ion sources, thermionic emitters, field emitters, T-F emitters, and plasma sources of electrons or ions. The richtstrahlwert or 'brightness' of a beam for any accelerating voltage V0 is then simply given by Rsub(v)*=Rsub(v)* V0 A/m2 sr; beam radiance is given by W*=R*V02 W/m2 sr. Equations for Rsub(v)* are presented for each type of source and numerical values shown in the form of graphs. (Auth.)
