Inelastic neutron scattering on the compounds RE2NiGe3 (RE = La, Ce)

Description

The intermetallic Ce2NiGe3 is reported to be a Kondo lattice compound. Low temperature magnetic measurements establish spin-glass like behavior, expected to originate due to magnetic frustration and disorder, arising from random intermixing at Ni and Ge sites. Detailed temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurements were carried out on RE2NiGe3 (RE = La, Ce) employing the thermal time-of-flight (TOF) neutron spectrometer IN4 at Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) to study the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations. These measurements confirmed crystalline electric field (CEF) level at 12 MeV consistent with the reported specific heat data. (author)
