Optimization of image quality and radiation dose in chest X-ray examinations

  • 1. Instituto de Física Gleb Wataghin, UNICAMP, Campinas, SP (Brazil)

Description

Due to the structures of different compositions and densities included in a chest X-ray, it is necessary to acquire high quality images that allowing detect these structures. It is necessary to use an optimized configuration in which the best image quality is obtained with the smallest possible dose being delivered to the patient. The purpose of this work is optimizing the quality of the image and the dose delivered in Adult Computerized Chest Radiography. For that, we acquired images of phantoms using the X-ray equipment installed at the Women's Hospital - CAISM/UNICAMP, using different exposure parameters such as the potential of the X-ray tube and filter thickness and material. The optimal exposure conditions were based on the Figure of Merit (FOM), calculated from results of image quality and dose. (author)
