Estimation of patients dose in mammographic screening examinations

Description
The exposure dose for mammography was measured at 28 institutions in Aichi Prefecture. In addition, based on a questionnaire sent to 531 institutions throughout Japan, the exposure dose for mammography was estimated. The thickness of the compressed breast was assumed to be 4 cm. The average absorbed dose by the mammary glands was 1.298 mGy with a grid 0.663 mGy without a grid, and 0.992 mGy on average. Based on these results, the average exposure doese for mammography in Japan was estimated to be 1.795 mGy. In 76% of the institutions studied. the dose was less than 2 mGy. (author)
