Measurement of urinary beryllium by ICPMS to assess occupational exposure

Description
Full text: A method was developed for beryllium in urine using a Thermo X-Series 1 ICPMS in normal mode with optimized cone configuration. Urine samples (n=110) spiked at 50 ng/L showed a 94 % recovery and the LOD was 2 ng/L. Results from 298 samples (containing 135 paired samples) from workers with potential exposure to beryllium and 62 control samples showed that mean and 90th percentiles for the workers were 20.3 and 36.7 ng/L compared with 15 ng/L and 23 ng/L in the controls. Statistical analysis showed that workers who smoked had significantly higher levels of beryllium at the end of the week than non-smokers. (author)
