The US Dept. of Energy moratorium on off-site shipment of hazardous wastes generated in radiological areas
Description
On May 17, 1991, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) imposed a complexwide moratorium on off-site shipment of radioactive wastes originating in radiological areas. The moratorium resulted from DOE recognition that field facilities across the nation were using inappropriate and inconsistent criteria and methodologies for qualifying wastes containing trace levels of radioactivity as open-quotes nonradioactive.close quotes This recognition was occasioned by a series of articles in a Baton Rouge, Louisiana, newspaper on the Rollins Environmental Services incinerator in Baton Rouge
