Effect of sulfate ions on stress corrosion crack propagation in austenitic stainless steels under modified PWR primary conditions

Description

The effect of sulfate ions and dissolved oxygen on SCC propagation in austenitic stainless steels was studied under modified PWR primary water conditions. Type 304 Stainless Steel (304SS) was used in this study. Sheet specimens were prepared by cold rolling. After the cold rolling, solution heat treatment was conducted at 1060degC. Then sensitization treatment was carried out at 650degC for 24 hours for a fraction of them. The SCC propagation rate was investigated using the WOL test method in 500ppm B and 2ppm Li at 240degC. Stress intensity factor was 30MPa. Test duraton was 500 hours. The concentration of dissolved oxygen was changed from <0.01 to 8ppm. The effect of SO4 ions was investigated by controlling from <0.05 to 1ppm. For sensitized Type 304SS, the SCC propagation rate increased with the concentration of dissolved oxygen and increased with the concentration of sulfate ions. For solution heat treated Type 304SS, the SCC propagation rate was lower than that for sensitized Type 304SS, and independent of the concentration of sulfate ions. (author)
