1976 was a difficult year for the South African gold and uranium ore mining industry, the region of Witwatersrand (Transvaal province) producing some 75% of all the gold mined in the western world besides being an important producer of uranium oxide. Despite the gold production, declining since 1971, not showing a downward tendency anymore as far as the quantity was concerned, the economic result, however, deteriorated as a consequence of continuously falling gold prices, but also on account of the inflationary rise in wages and the prices for energy and materials. Much higher prices for uranium oxide, which some mines produce as interim products from the 'degolded' slurries of their gold ore leaching plants, improved the economic overall result only to a small degree. Abstract (German)
Das Jahr 1976 war fuer den suedafrikanischen Gold- und Uranerzbergbau, der am Witwatersrand (Provinz Transvaal) rd. 75% des gesamten in der westlichen Welt gewonnen Goldes foerdert und der auch ein bedeutender Produzent von Uranoxid ist, ein schwieriges Jahr. Zwar konnte die seit 1971 ruecklaeufige Goldproduktion mengenmaessig erstmals wieder gehalten werden. Das wirtschaftliche Ergebnis verschlechterte sich jedoch erheblich, hauptsaechlich als Folge des weiteren Rueckganges des Goldpreises aber auch der inflationaeren Steigerung der Loehne und der Preise fuer Energie und Material. Wesentlich hoehere Preise fuer Uranoxid, das einige Gruben aus den entgoldeten Sclaemmen ihrer Golderzlaugereien in Form eines Zwischenprodukts gewinnen, konnten das wirtschaftliche Gesamtergebnis nur wenig verbessern.
