Particularities of the magnetospheric configuration during stable convection activity

  • 1. AN SSSR, Kol'skij Filial (Russian Federation). Polyarnyj Geofizicheskij Inst.

Description

Direct measurements of the magnetic field are compared with the models T89 during the stable convection period on 24.11.81. On the daytime side a strong depression of the BZ component (∼30nT) is observed along with erosion of the diurnal magnetopause in the magnetosphere, and as a result the polar cusp in the Norther semisphere has descended to the geomagnetic latitude of 70 deg. In the nighttime magnetosphere at r≅6.6 Re the magnetic configuration is characterized by a developed current sheet and it much differs from the model one. The problems of application of models in magnetospheric studies are discussed
