Radioactive waste containment

Description

The problem of confining the radioactive wastes produced from the nuclear industry, after the ore concentration stage, is envisaged. These residues being not released into the environment are to be stored. The management policy consists in classifying them in view of adapting to each type of treatment, the suitable conditioning and storage. This classification is made with taking account of the following data: radioactivity (weak, medium or high) nature and lifetime of this radioactivity (transuranians) physical nature and volume. The principles retained are those of volume reduction and shaping into insoluble solids (vitrification)

Abstract (French)

On considere le probleme du confinement des dechets radioactifs engendres par l'industrie nucleaire et qui sont produits apres elaboration du concentre de minerais. Il s'agit des residus qui ne sont pas rejetes dans l'environnement et que l'on doit stocker. La politique de gestion consiste a les classer afin d'adapter a chaque categorie le traitement, le conditionnement et le stockage appropries. Ce classement se fait en tenant compte des donnees suivantes: radioactivite (faible, moyenne ou haute) de la nature et duree de cette radioactivite (transuraniens) de la nature physique et du volume. Les principes retenus sont ceux de la reduction de volume et de la mise sous forme solide et insoluble (vitrification)
