Investigation of sucrose and L-alanine radicals produced by heavy-ion irradiation using EPR

Description

The potential use of a sucrose dosimeter to evaluate linear energy transfer (LET) and absorbed dose measurement for heavy ion and X ray radiation was investigated with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The observed stable free radicals produced by irradiation with heavy-ions (He, C, Si, Ne ions) and X ray irradiation were similar and exhibit spectra of approximately 7 mT wide with several hyperfine structures. The radical yield produced by ion beam irradiation increased linearly as the absorbed dose increased and decreased logarithmically as the LET increased. In addition, the two-dimensional (2D) EPR imaging with a spatial resolution of ca. 0.37 mm was performed. The high radical intensities in relation to the C ion energy deposition are clearly observed at Bragg peak region. (author)

Abstract (Japanese)

電子常磁性共鳴(EPR)法を用いてスクロースの重粒子イオンや X 線照射で生成するラジカル収量の LET 依存性,線量依存性等の測定から,その線量計としての潜在的な適用性をアラニンと比較し検討した。He, C, Si, Ne などの重粒子イオンをスクロースに照射した場合も,X 線照射同様,微細構造を有しほぼ7 mT に広がる安定なフリーラジカルの生成が観測された。単位線量あたりラジカル収量は重粒子の照射量の増加に比例して増大するが,LET の増加に対し減少する。同じLET でも軽イオン照射の方が収量は低い。また,2 次元 EPR イメージングを試みた。空間分解能は0.37 mm 程度で,ブラッグピーク領域を検出することができた。(著者)
