Protective effect of adeturon under subtotal irradiation conditions

  • 1. Meditsinska Akademiya, Sofia (Bulgaria). Nauchen Inst. po Rentgenologiya i Radiobiologiya

Description

Preliminary data on the radioprotective effect of adeturon, combined with abdominal region screening, are reported. Studies are conducted on sexually mature male rats of the Wistar line. Lead screens with thickness 2,5 mm and height 50 mm, providing for 30% average reduction of the dose absorbed by the part protected, are used. Whole-body irradiation with doses ranging from 6,0 to 9,0 Gy, and subtotal one - 8,0 to 15,0 Gy, are performed using a 4 point 137Cs radiation source. Adeturon is administered by intraperitoneal injection 15 minutes prior to irradiation of the screened animals with LD50/30 at doses 300, 200, 100 and 50 mg/kg. Under the conditions described LD50/30 for whole-body irradiation amounts to 8,0 Gy, and for the screened animals - 9,5 Gy. Dose reduction factor (DRF) of the physical protection is equal to 1,17. It is demonstrated that the combined application of adeturon with local protection contributes to attain a high effect using a non-toxic dose of the protectior, appreciably lower than maximum permissible one (up to 1/17 LD50)
