Gamma radiation effects on quartz
- 1. Sao Paulo Univ., SP (Brazil). Inst. de Fisica
Description
Effects of 60 Co gamma-ray radiation and of isochronal thermal annealing on quartz grains, extracted from dune sands at Sao Francisco River, BA, Brazil, were investigated. Natural quartz samples without any additional irradiation exhibit and electron spin resonance (ESR) signal typical of the E'1 center. The saturation curve of the ESR signal intensity as a function of microwave power is intermediate between the homogeneous and the complete inhomogeneous case in both natural and irradiated quartz samples. The additional irradiation changes the shape of the ESR signal and reduces the value of the product of T1 and T2. It is possible to observe a generation of a new paramagnetic center induced in natural quartz by gamma irradiation. (author)
