Skull Oxide Disposition and Treatment

Description

In the melt refining operation, in which volatile and chemically active ..fission products are removed from the fuel alloy, a residue or skull containing about 5% of the alloy charged remains in the crucible when the : ingot is poured. It was initially intended that the uranium in the skull be recovered at least on a demonstration basis, by the Ebr-II Skull Reclamation Process (ANL-6818; this report, Section IC).
