Description
In the PIAFE project it is planed to combine the high flux reactor of ILL and the SARA cyclotrons to produce accelerated Radioactive Nuclear Beams (RNBs) of fission products. PIAFE will have the potential to produce beams of very neutron rich nuclei in the mass range 70<A<160, of unsurpassed intensities and it will thus complement other RNB facilities based on spallation or on reactions with light ions, which are superior in the production of neutron-poor nuclei. The produced nuclei can be either used in ISOLDE type experiments (Phase I), with keV beams, or as accelerated beams (Phase II) with energies ranging between 4 and 14 MeV/nucleon. The main features of the project and the physics case are reported. (author). 15 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab
