Description

The Materials Interface Interactions Test (MIIT) in situ began in 1986, the purpose being to evaluate waste-form glass corrosion in the repository environment. Samples were exposed to brine solutions at 900C for 6 months and 1 year in instrumented boreholes at the WIPP site. A wide variety of waste-form glasses, the HMI (PAMELA) borosilicate glass among them, were included in the test. The results of this relatively short-term in situ experiment can be compared to results obtained in the laboratory, predictions based on reaction path modelling, and the alteration effects seen in naturally altered analogue glasses
