A case of adenosquamous cell carcinoma of the rectum 31 years after radiation therapy for uterine cancer

A-75-year-old woman had undergone hysterectomy and radiation therapy for uterine cancer 31 years before and low anterior resection for a recto-vesical fistula 16 years before. Three years after the second operation, an ileal conduit was constructed due to an ileovesical fistula. Eleven years later, colonoscopic examination for rectal bleeding showed a cancerous lesion in the rectum, necessitating abdominoperineal excision. Histopathological examination showed adenosquamous cell carcinoma (a2, ly0, v0, n0, stage II). Adenosquamous cell carcinoma after radiation therapy is very rare. Long-term follow-up after pelvic radiation therapy is thus necessary because of the possible occurrence of secondary rectal cancer. (author)
