Hanford's C reactor large-scale demonstration project

Description

Demonstrating and implementing innovative technologies that are more effective, can lower costs, and that require less personnel exposure to radiological and chemical contaminants are key elements of the US DOE Hanford C reactor interim safe storage (ISS) decontamination and decommissioning technology demonstration project. This project will help the DOE determine what to do with the Hanford site's eight deactivated, surplus production reactors. This article discusses the following aspects of the project: project objectives; facility location; facility history; reactor building; existing conditions; selecting technologies to demonstrate. 8 figs
