Description

Fourteen radionuclides were detected in a soil sample collected on May 19 at Namie-cho Sakai, Fukushima Prefecture, 8 km northwest from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The detected radionuclides consisted of the fission products, 125Sb, 127mTe, 129mTe, 137Cs, 140Ba (140La), 141Ce and 144Ce, the neutron capture products from nonradioactive fission nuclides or long-lived fission nuclides, 110mAg, 134Cs and 136Cs, and the neutron activation products of structural materials, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co and 114mIn. The productions of 55Fe, 59Ni and 63Ni are inferred from the reactions of 54Fe(n, p) 54Mn, 58Ni(n, p) 58Co and 59Co(n, γ) 60Co Liquid scintillation counting is the preferred method for detecting 55Fe, 59Ni and 63Ni. We will report the procedure of radiochemical separation and the measurement method of liquid scintillation counting for 55Fe, 59Ni and 63Ni. (author)
