The Thermos program for nuclear reactors specialized in district heating

Description

Many studies have been made in France on the use of nuclear heat for district heating. After a brief account of the problems raised by the use of thermal waste from big nuclear power stations, the quantitative and qualitative needs of heating networks are analyzed and the Thermos project described. This is a very robust reactor of the pool type, with an output of 100MW, supplying low-pressure water at 100 deg C. The advantages from the aspects of safety and economy are described, and the present state of the project and its possible developments summarized

Abstract (French)

L'utilisation de la chaleur nucleaire pour le chauffage urbain fait l'objet de nombreuses etudes en France. Apres avoir expose sommairement les problemes poses par l'utilisation des rejets thermiques des grandes centrales electronucleaires, on analyse les besoins quantitatifs et qualitatifs des reseaux de chauffage et on decrit le projet Thermos. Il s'agit d'un reacteur tres rustique, de type piscine, d'une puissance de 100MW, fournissant de l'eau basse-pression a 100 deg C. On precise ses avantages en surete et en economie, et on fait le point de l'etat actuel du projet et de ses developpements possibles
