Rydberg atoms and cavities: observation of decoherence in a quantum measurement
Description
We present the observation of the decoherence phenomenon, observed on a simple system, modelling an ideal quantum measurement. The experiment is based on the interaction of a circular Rydberg atom with a microwave field that contains a few photons stored in a superconducting cavity. It creates a quantum superposition involving field states with macroscopically distinct phases. The coherence of the state is tested by a second atom. We observe the transformation of an initially coherent superposition into a statistical mixture. This work represents an experimental contribution to the fundamental issue of the nonexistence of quantum superpositions at a macroscopic scale. Our results are in very good agreement with theory and support the interpretation of decoherence as being the result of the coupling between a system and its environment. (author)
Abstract (French)
Dans ce memoire nous presentons l'observation de la decoherence dans une situation simple, modelisant une mesure quantique ideale. Nous exploitons l'interaction entre un champ micro-onde confine dans une cavite ne contenant que quelques photons et un atome de Rydberg circulaire. Elle cree un etat de superposition quantique qui implique simultanement deux etats du champ de phases macroscopiquement differentes. La decoherence, i. e. la transformation de la superposition initialement coherente en un melange statistique, est observee a l'aide d'un second atome. Celui-ci sonde l'etat du champ un certain temps apres l'interaction avec le premier atome. Cette etude apporte un element de reponse experimental a la question fondamentale que pose la non-existence de superpositions quantiques coherentes dans le monde macroscopique. Nos resultats sont en tres bon accord avec les predictions theoriques. Ils confirment que le couplage entre un systeme physique et son environnement se trouve a l'origine de la decoherence.
