Description
Results of the separate and combined effect of ionizing radiation and hyperthermia on rhabdomyosarcomas in rats are studied morphologically. Tumor resorption and the following stable cure in 30% of animals are observed after the combined effect of radiation and hyperthermia. The morphological picture of tumor injury after heating is characterized by a rapid formation of destructive alterations, interphase cell death, clearcut boundaries between injured and intact tissues. The morphological picture of radiation tumor injury is characterized by a slow development of injury processes, the absence of demakation zones, reproductive cell death. The combined effect of radiation and hyperthermia brings about a morphological picture which is characterized by injury indices from each of the two agents, in the earlier periods of time manifestations of thermal injury prevailing and those of radiation injury prevailing in later periols
