Ultrasound studies of (La,Sr)/sub 2/CuO/sub 4/ and YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/

Description
The authors measure the changes in sound velocity in the two high T/sub c/ superconductors (La,Sr)/sub 2/CuO/sub 4/ and YB/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ from room temperature through superconducting transitions. Both systems exhibit anomalous behavior at T/sub c/. In a conventional superconductor at T/sub c/ there is a small drop in the sound velocity typically of order a few ppm and the sound velocity at T=0 stays below its value at T/sub c/. In La/sub 1.85/Sr/sub 15/CuO/sub 4/ there is a large drop (--150ppm) at T/sub c/ and then a large hardening below T/sub c/ of --1000ppm. In YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/ there is no drop at T/sub c/ but it also exhibits a large hardening below T/sub c/ of --1000ppm. This behavior is shown in Figure 1 for La/sub 1.85/Sr/sub 15/CuO/sub 4/ and Figure 2 for Ba/sub 2/YCu/sub 3/O/sub 7/
