Amid the effort to prepare for the LHC proton collider for CERN's 27-kilometre LEP tunnel, the LEP electronpositron collider remains the main research thrust of European high energy physics. With well over half a million Z particles collected last year alone (to complement the 100,000 from 1989 operations) the four big experiments - Aleph, Delphi, L3 and Opal - are off to a flying start
