Soil moisture survey experiment at Phoenix, Arizona

Description

An aerial survey employing the measurement of natural terrestrial gamma radiation was carried out over farm lands east of Phoenix, Arizona, on March 18, 1975. The purpose of the survey was to determine soil moisture by detecting differences in the terrestrial gamma flux attentuation as a function of soil moisture content. The average soil moisture value for the 16-mile long survey line 1, derived from these aerial measurements was 21.56%. Mile-by-mile averages of the aerial data ranged from 16.6% to 32.2%. This survey was carried out in order to offer an independent method of validating soil moisture data derived from aerial microwave and infrared measurements performed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
