Excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) built on highly excited states in /sup 114/Sn

  • 1. Free Univ., Amsterdam

Description

Enhanced γ-ray transitions with energies ranging from 10 to 20 MeV have recently been observed in HI fusion-evaporation reactions. These transitions are associated with the decay of the GDR imposed on highly excited states. The authors have studied this process in more detail for a compound nucleus in a selected region of excitation energy and angular momentum using the /sup 110/Cd(α, γ) /sup 114/Sn reaction at E/sub α/ = 26 MeV. By measuring prompt high energy γ-rays in coincidence with γ-rays following the decay of the J/sup π/ = 7/sup -/ (T/sub 1/2/ = 733 ns) isomer in /sup 114/Sn the weak (α, γ) reaction channel was strongly enhanced compared to the dominating /sup 110/Cd(γ,2nγ) /sup 112/Sn reaction
