Topology and supersymmetry breaking in ten-dimensional super-Yang-Mills theory

  • 1. Ecole Normale Superieure, 75 - Paris (France). Lab. de Physique Theorique

Description

We point out that the vacuum of ten-dimensional super-Yang-Mills theory is characterized by an angle THETA, provided that the gauge group is SU(n), n>=5, SO(10), or E6. Despite the presence of a massless fermion, THETA is a physical parameter because there is no anomalous chiral U(1) symmetry. We argue that for THETAnot=0 supersymmetry can be spontaneously broken by instanton-like effects. Parity is also broken for general THETAnot=0. (orig.)
