This patent describes a method for reducing the occurrence of irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking in the structural components of the core of a light water nuclear reactor, the method comprising forming the structural components from an austenitic stainless steel containing a maximum of about 0.05% N, a maximum of about 0.005% P, a maximum of about 0.05% Si and a maximum of about 0.005% S
