Nucleus - air interactions of extensive air showers at ultrahigh energies

Description

The HIJING and VENUS models of relativistic hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions are used to study the interactions of protons and of nuclei with nitrogen nuclei, specific for extensive air shower developments initiated by cosmic rays in the atmosphere. The transverse energy and the transverse momentum of the secondary particles as well as their energy and mass dependence were investigated in detail. The results are presented with particular emphasis on the contributions of the minijets in the HIJING model and on the validity of the superposition models in this energy range. (author)
