Description
A methodology has been developed to quantify the effectiveness of long-lived fission product (LLFP) transmutation; the focus is on the seven LLFPs. The total integrated released dose due to a radionuclide species emplaced in a geologic repository is calculated assuming continuous exposure to water at the accessible environment contaminated with the species. This measure is then used used to calculate the integrated released-dose reduction per neutron utilized for LLFP transmutation in an accelerator-driven system.. This measure of effectiveness permits the benefits of transmutation (long-term dose reduction) to be quantified in terms of investment in accelerator-driven neutron production technology. (authors)
