Description
During bombardment of graphite with any kind of energetic particles an unexpected increase of the eroded C-atom flux with increasing graphite temperature has been observed. In recent investigations it has been found that this effect consists of the isotropic emission of single carbon atoms with thermal energies. A model has been developed explaining this effect by the production of Frenkel pairs with a thermal diffusion of the radiation produced interstitials to the near surface where they evaporate with a neglegible activation energy.
