Bone mineral content evaluation system: calibration

  • 1. Universidade Federal, Rio de Janeiro, RJ (Brazil). Coordenacao dos Programas de Pos-graduacao de Engenharia

Description

We present in this paper a device developed in our laboratory for evaluating the bone mineral content in vivo by using monoenergetic gamma rays. The method employed is based upon the attenuation of a low energy radiation beam, being characterized by measurements of the intensity beam, performed at equally spaced intervals in a specified forearm cross section area. The precision obtained with this procedure (in terms of bone mineral content) is about five percent. The total measurement time is 15 minutes and the radiation dose the patient receive is considerably low and restricted to a narrow band of the forearm. (author)
