History of targeted removal of radionuclides from drinking water in the Czech Republic

  • 1. Statni ustav pro jadernou bezpecnost, Praha (Czech Republic)

Description

The topic of the contribution is the development of regulation of natural radiation in drinking water supplied for public use in the Czech Republic. The contribution contains an overview of legal regulations that historically relate to the regulation of radiation from drinking water, based on the records of water supply systems in SUJB and the results of systematic measurement and evaluation of the content of natural radionuclides in water, which are handed over to water suppliers by SUJB as part of their notification obligation. The contribution also includes information on the obligations of operators of water treatment plants where the targeted removal of radionuclides from underground water sources takes place. Radiological indicators volume activity of radon and total volume activity of alpha and beta were evaluated against the so-called guide value, for individual radionuclides the so-called limit value. When the guideline value for the total volume activity of alpha and beta was exceeded, a supplementary analysis was carried out to determine the individual radionuclides responsible for exceeding it and optimization of radiation protection was carried out. When the limit value was exceeded, it was not possible to supply water without measures to reduce the content of the natural radionuclide. Currently, the SUJB keeps a total of 532 water supply systems with deradonization equipment and 29 water supply systems with targeted uranium removal on file. (authors)
