Exposure to radon in British mines

Miners' doses from radon in over 80% of UK non-coal and private sector coal mines have been estimated from area monitoring with passive monitors and information about work procedures. Average annual doses are estimated to be 4.5 mSv and 1.8 mSv respectively, with results above 15 mSv a year for about 250 miners. Doses have been dramatically reduced in some mines at very low cost and there is scope for further improvement. Efforts to maintain the downward trend in doses are continuing particularly in mines where reductions are most pressing. (Author)
