Review of uranium tailings cover design

  • 1. Nuclear Regulatory Comm., Golden, CO (USA)
  • 2. Steffen Robertson and Kirsten, Lakewood, CO (USA)

Description

The design of covers for the control of radon emanation from uranium tailings is critical in providing adequate safety to the public for the design life of the facility. Many sites requiring the construction of covers are large and require a well conceived thought process to develop the most cost-effective cover design. The design and subsequent construction will be greatly impacted by available material types and the site conditions. The areas covered within this paper include the theory of proper cover design, critical parameters and the development of design data, and final design considerations
