Water distribution in rabbits undergoing hypothermia. Experimental study using radio-sodium and tritiated water

The simultaneous distributions of labelled water (HTO) and sodium (Na 24) have been studied in rabbits undergoing experimental hypothermia (internal temperature 19-20 deg. C) and compared with those observed under the same conditions in rabbits at normal temperature. The speed of distribution of water or of sodium within the body was found to be unaffected by hypothermia; the apparent distribution volume of the tracer as a function of time was, on the other hand, always smaller in the chilled rabbits than in the normal, both for HTO and radiosodium. The diminution of the diffusion space was relatively greater for radiosodium (45 per cent of the control value) than for HTO (18 percent). Kinetic study indicated that this diminution during hypothermia was not due to a reduced rate of diffusion of the indicators into unmodified compartments but rather to a normal diffusion rate into available compartments of smaller volume. The following interpretation is advanced. The diminution of accessible HTO space is the result of the circulatory exclusion of certain vascular territories including both extracellular and cellular spaces (18 per cent). In addition to this, some extracellular water (27 per cent) would shift into the cells during chilling: this would explain the greater reduction of available sodium space than water space. Abstract (French)
Les distributions simultanees d'eau tritiee et de sodium marque ont ete etudiees chez le lapin en hypothermie experimentale (temperature centrale 19 a 20 deg.) et comparees a celles observees dans les memes conditions chez le lapin a temperature normale. L'hypothermie n'a pas modifie la vitesse de distribution dans l'organisme ni de l'eau, ni du sodium. Par contre, le 'volume apparent de distribution' des indicateurs en fonction du temps a toujours ete trouve plus petit chez les lapins refroidis que chez les temoins, aussi bien pour l'eau tritiee que pour le radio-sodium. Par rapport aux temoins, la diminution de l'espace de diffusion est proportionnellement plus importante pour le radio-sodium (45 p. 100) que pour l'eau tritiee (18 p. 100). L'etude cinetique indique que cette diminution au cours de l'hypothermie ne resulte pas d'une diffusion plus lente dans des 'compartiments' inchanges, mais au contraire d'une diffusion a vitesse peu changee dans des 'compartiments' accessibles de volume restreint. L'interpretation suggeree stipule que la diminution de l''espace HTO' accessible proviendrait de l'exclusion circulatoire de certains territoires vasculaires entrainant la mise hors feu des liquides extracellulaires et cellulaires correspondants (18 p. 100). En plus, une partie de l'eau des liquides extracellulaires (27 p. 100) passerait dans les cellules durant le refroidissement, ce qui expliquerait la diminution plus prononcee de l''espace sodium' que de l''espace eau' accessible a la diffusion des deux indicateurs pendant la duree de nos experiences.
