Optimisation of the production of 11CO2 by proton irradiation of nitrogen gas

  • 1. Ghent Rijksuniversiteit (Belgium). Inst. of Nuclear Sciences

Description

Yields for the production of 11CO2 by proton irradiation of nitrogen gas using the 14N(p,α)11C reaction may be low due to scattering of the proton beam by the entrance foils of the target gas holder and the target gas, and also to reduction of the gas density because of heating by the beam. For an optimised target system, irradiated with a 15 μA beam of 18.0 MeV protons, the yield of 11C is (83.3 +- 3.7) 1014 Bq/A (225 +- 10 mCi/μA) at saturation, in agreement with the thick target yield of the 14N(p,α)11C reaction.
