Detection sensitivity of an LSDTS for spent-fuel fissile assay application

Description
The development of a reliable and highly tamper-proof assay device for measuring the fissile contents of intact spent fuel elements is crucial to nuclear materials safeguards and is very useful for fuel cycle analysis and methods verification. The lead slowing down time spectrometer (LSDTS) has been demonstrated to meet these objectives. Previous papers reported on various characteristics of such a device and on its operational performance. This paper presents the results of the LSDTS spatial detection sensitivity analysis determined from a set of Monte Carlo simulations. In addition to being crucial from a safeguards standpoint, sufficient sensitivity of the LSDTS assay detectors to induced fission interactions inside the fuel assembly could also be utilized for prompt neutron tomography of fissile spatial distribution in spent fuel
