Description

Transverse and longitudinal magnetostriction of a polycrystalline MgB2 superconductor was measured by the three-terminal capacitance technique. Both components of the magnetostriction were found to be of an order of 10-5 at 15 K. The correlation between the transverse and longitudinal strain of the sample was analysed in the framework of the pinning-induced mechanism of magnetostriction. By a comparison of the longitudinal and transverse strain Poisson's ratio was estimated. The scaling behaviour of the two components of the magnetostriction was related to the scaling of the pinning forces in the investigated material
