Morphological changes in mammary gland cancer of various histastructure after large-dose fractionated preoperative irradiation

  • 1. Khar'kovskij Nauchno-Issledovatel'skij Inst. Meditsinskoj Radiologii (Ukrainian SSR)

Description

The authors studied morphological changes in the tumour of the mammary gland in 16 patients who had undergone preoperative irradiation in the ''Rokus'' unit in large-dose fractionation. In tumours with scirrhous carcinoma of the mammary gland, morphological changes connected with radiation therapy were not observed. In nonscirrhous carcinomas of the mammary gland after preoperative irradiation by large fractions sharp dystrophic changes are revealed in the tumoral cells, growth at the place of the perished cancerous cells of the young connective tissue, and also phenomena of marked sclerosis and hyalinosis in the connective-tissue stroma of the tumour. It has been supposed that using large fractionation for the treatment of scirrhous forms of mammary gland carcinoma is not reasonable
