Preparation and properties of nanophase ceramics
- 1. Univ. of Illinois, Urbana (United States)
Description
Pure nanophase ceramics (TiO2 and ZrO2), nanophase alloys (TixY1-xO2), and nanophase composites (TiO2/Y2O3, ZrO2/Al2O3) were prepared by inert gas condensation methods, and studies of sintering, grain growth, hardness, and superplastic deformation were performed. Due to the ultra small grain sizes, sintering and deformation kinetics are greatly enhanced, although with concomitant grain growth. Densification occurred several hundred K below that of standard powders and strains up to 0.6 were obtained in TiO2 at temperatures less than half the melting temperature. Attempts to control grain growth using impurity doping and second phase particles are discussed
